Cultural Awareness in Service – Guest Lecture Series at Temasek Polytechnic & Tourism Academy @ Sentosa
By Ivory Lim (2nd June 2007)
“What is culture and how does it affect service providers?” – this was the question posed by our trainers during a guest lecture series at Temasek Polytechnic (TP) on “Cultural Awareness in Service” from 28 May to 2 June.
This lecture series was attended by the students from Temasek Polytechnic and the Tourism Academy @ Sentosa. They are undertaking the Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Management and Diploma in Leisure and Resort Management respectively.
Upon graduation, these students will come into contact with customers from all over the world and there is a need for them to be service providers who are culturally aware. With this in mind, LRDA customised a one-hour lecture session where theoretical knowledge of culture was fused with our service experience in the airlines and hotels, to create an entertaining yet highly informative learning experience.
Our trainers shared with students the many types of cultures and how they react under certain situations. Students also got to see how cultural misunderstandings could lead to a lapse in service standards.
We would like to thank Temasek Polytechnic and the Tourism Academy @ Sentosa for inviting us as guest lecturers and we look forward to forging a closer relationship together!
